Mike Waring

I have been a competitive runner, on and off, since 1981, having been a member of Ellesmere Port AC which then became part of Whitby Heath AC (itself later to merge with CEPAC to become the current West Cheshire AC). In the running boom of the 1980’s I took part in many inaugural races, some of which continue today, like the Sutton Six, Chester Half Marathon and the first Borders League race.

 

After a long period away from competitive running, I was convinced to race again when my partner Nicola decided to train for her first Triathlon, the Deva Diva’s.

 

In 2013 I was part of the core team of volunteers that started up Delamere parkrun, then in 2016 I helped start up Chester parkrun, and I am still part of its core team.

 

I’m also a very keen cyclist, owner of too many bikes and a life member of the Cyclist’s Touring Club (now Cycling UK), so since the 1980’s I’ve ridden many cycle camping tours of the UK (including the e2e), Belgium and the Netherlands, interspersed in the early 1990’s with a few of the first MTB races.

 

After meeting up with Chester Tri core members Alan Cronin and Sally Napthen while riding a Cycle Sportive in May 2012, it was inevitable that I joined Chester Triathlon Club and specialised in Duathlon. 3 years later competing at the AG Sprint Duathlon World Championships in Adelaide.

 

Sadly, Alan is no longer with us, but he has inspired me to give back to our club, helping and encouraging others to achieve their goals.
