Next Borders League races
About the Borders League
Chester Triathlon Club competes in the Borders League each year. The league is a series of local monthly road races usually held from October to April, ranging from 5 to 6 miles in length and staged on a Sunday morning, usually with a start time of 11.00.
These races are certainly not just for the faster members of the club. They are an opportunity for all of us to have a good hard run which will do much to benefit our progress. Use them as a training session or to build experience of a race situation. As you tend to compete against the same people month on month it provides a good measure (and incentive!) of how you are getting on throughout the season.
Like all Leagues we compete in, we don’t have to have the same people in each race, so come along even if you can only make a couple of dates.
Everyone is welcome, remember, we all help the overall scores one way or another.
The venues are varied, packed with friendly faces (even from rival clubs) and enthusiastic support. For those races slightly further afield the club can provide transport for members.
Chester Tri also leads the field in post race catering – hot drinks and flap jacks!
The 2023/24 league season is to consist of 6 league races. After these, there will be a midweek evening Relay which is to be a free-standing race to be followed by the presentation.
Team competition is split into 2 Divisions with trophies for overall Teams and also for individual age groups. There are 10 or 7 counters for the Men’s team and 6 or 4 for the Women’s team, if in Division 1 or 2. You need 5 out the 6 league races to count in the individual standings. All 6 league races count for the team standings.
There is a barcode system for recording results, similar to parkrun. Barcodes are available for registered runners to print off from the Borders League website here.
The races are completely free, but you must bring your barcode to carry with you during the race, plus written on the back:- your full name, ICE phone number plus any medical conditions relevant to first aiders (this is the same info you would normally provide for any race).
After the races, meet us back at our Chester Tri flag and these will be scanned, along with the finish token (also a barcode).
All athletes who have EA membership have been assigned a barcode.
If you are a new member or only just renewed your EA membership and can’t find your name on the Borders barcode list, you will need to register for a barcode in advance. This must be done no later than Thursday before the race. In this case contact run@nullchestertri.org.uk.
Minimum age is 15 on 1st September prior to the season starting.
Second claim runners may participate if their first claim club does not participate in the competition.
Further details, rules and results available here: www.bordersleague.org.uk
Remember – Don’t forget your barcode!
(It’s a good idea to laminate it or put it in a plastic wallet)
To take part you need:
- EA membership
- Chester Tri membership
- a club vest or T-shirt must be worn.
- your barcode must be carried with you.
You must have EA (England Athletics) membership to take part in this and all other league races. The annual fee is £15 and the membership year runs from 1st April to 31st March.

From January 1st 2025 EA and WA have made some rule changes:
The rules now state clearly that the wearing of headphones (apart from bone connecting sets) is not permitted at any races where the course is shared with others.
Race organisers are required to provide medical information to the on-course First Aid team. This will be reviewed at the Borders AGM in July but in the meantime two things required:
- Throughout the event, every athlete must carry some sort of identification that can be quickly accessed by the First Aid team if required. As an absolute minimum this should be; Full Name, any medical conditions relevant to the FA team, a phone number to contact in the event of an incident. This must be carried by the athlete before, during and after the race.
- Any person who has a relevant medical condition that the FA team should know about in the event of them being asked to deal with an incident is requested to hand that information to the FA team prior to the race. If it is in a sealed envelope marked with your name and club you can collect it afterwards or the FA team can destroy it (to ensure GDPR compliance).
