Local rides

There are loads of opportunities in the North West and further afield to improve your cycling endurance and speed.

Have you ever wanted to try a time trial but didn’t know where to start looking? Or how about attempting a sportive to experience new routes and climbs in nearby areas?

Below are several links to helpful websites to get you started. There is a fantastic local time trial that takes place in Saighton each week during the summer.

Cycling UK Affiliated Membership for Individuals

Contact bike@nullchestertri.org.uk for a unique code to join Cycle UK as a affiliated member. It costs just £24 for club members to take out individual Affiliated Membership which will provide 3rd Party Liability cover for them should they cause any damage or injury while cycling.

Individual Affiliated Membership also includes:

  • Discounts offered by a range of retailers including Cotswold Outdoor and YHA
  • An entertaining weekly e-newsletter, ‘CycleClips’, full of all the latest cycling news.

Time Trials

Saighton time trials

Just turn up and have a go. They are very friendly! They are organised on a rota by different clubs from April until the end of August.

Cost: under £5. No pre entry form needed.
Location: They run every Thursday at Saighton CH3 6EN. There is plenty of parking opposite Abbygate college.
Time: 6.00 to 630pm sign on the line for a 7pm start.

Mountain biking

Coed Llandegla Forest in North Wales.

The green and blue trails are great for beginners. The red and black trails offer more challenging and technical riding. The centre has mountain bike hire and a cracking café. For more information visit www.oneplanetadventure.com


Delamere is host to 2 family friendly Green graded trails and miles and miles of untapped and unmarked singletrack. The only way to find it is to explore.

Tracs, based at Delamere forest, lead a mountain bike ride every Thursday night (6.30pm). They are free to join and take place all year round – whatever the weather – with lights available for hire during the winter months. Contact Tracs for more information.

There are some fantastic local sportives. Some examples are the Wild Wales Challenge  starting in Bala and the Wiggle Etape Cymru starting at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse. On Sunday  11 June 2017 there are two rides starting from Eureka cafe organised by Prescott Eagle Road Club as a memorial to one of their past members, Brian Farrington.
